    Description

This narrative, focusing on Washington's black population, views the history of the National Capital from a perspective rarely used.  The District of Columbia from the earliest times had a
    substantial
number of black inhabitants.  The civil war eventually brought change to Washington and the elimination of slavery in the Capital marked the beginning of a new chapter.
This particular booklet was made possible and prepared for students and teachers to accompany an exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution on November 1, 1971 to January 28, 1972.
DESCRIPTION: Education Department of the National Portrait Gallery: Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; 1971; 1st edition; 40 pages; good condition in stapled paper wraps; light scuffing to front cover; light smudges and minor staining to covers; nicely illustrated with b/w photos; text is clean; binding is tight.
