Description
Up for grabs, a reconditioned Reed 3C vise. This model vise (built Feb '68, Erie, PA) is difficult to find, especially one in working condition. Made for blacksmiths, machinists and pipefitters, who need a vise for life. The only original part missing is the center bolt (attaches swivel base to vise). I would've turned one out, but I'm in the middle of restoring my lathe. So in it's place, I cut a 1-12 rod (oem tpi), added a nut, washer and bushing (see photo), works exactly like it should.
No cracks or repair work. I used just a wire brush, degreaser, sandpaper and file were used in the restoration. I blued the body and base (lead photo), because I wasn't sure whether to keep it or not. Vinegar will take it right off and do with it what you will.
Both the static and dynamic jaw supports, have small chips (see pics), but doesn't compromise integrity. Unfortunately, the slide has scars (top only) from some d*mb*ss of years past, but still slides beautifully. Weighs 120 lbs, sits on a swivel base, has 5" jaws that open to 8". Length of 22 1/2" and a height of 13". The pipe jaws (hardened tool steel)
are in excellent condition and have a maximum pipe diameter capacity of 4 1/2".
I could ramble on about this 53 year old vise, so if you're still reading, you know what it is. I have more photos, if interested.
