    Description

African Mask Masterpiece/Vintage Sese Wood African Mask Collectible/Wooden Mime
African masks take diverse styles and forms.
In Africa, masks mainly had a spiritual and/or religious significance.
    Although simple in form, t
hese carved objects embody complex and multiple meanings, elaborated through proverbs, skits and dances hence commonly used
in rituals, ceremonies, worship, and entertainment.
Traditionally, they served diverse purposes like in judiciary contexts (regulating disagreements), honoring the dead, fertility and initiation rituals while others were used to educate the younger generations through story telling.
They were mostly made from hard-carved sese wood decorated using cowrie shells, metal, beads, animal teeth, claws, raffia grass, fiber, hairs, horns, cotton cloth or feathers and at times, a sacrificial material.
Please note these are traditional/old masks. Imperfections are to be expected such as dings, broken cowrie shells, fading in wood,  and minor chips and cracks which are signs of aging.
Age: Early to Second Half of the 20th Century.
These vintage African masks have a rustic and rugged finish and will give your home a unique ethnic and warm atmospheric style.
